Daily Speeches

Class begins with a student speech dealing with current event.. These news speeches are assigned ahead of time and each student will likely present six during the course of the school year.  When you are assigned to give the news for the day, you should check below for essential criteria.

News Speeches

News speeches are intended to help follow current events in our community.  In that we are part of many different communities, the subject matter will pertain not only to the local area and nationally, but also on an international basis as well.  Speeches should be approximately 4-5 minutes in length and must include the following minimum components in order to qualify for an A grade.

  • learn from other students' speeches

  • use a notecard(s) with phrases as prompts (DO NOT WRITE OUT YOUR SPEECH IN COMPLETE SENTENCES as it leads to reading)

  • ask how to pronounce difficult words/names ahead of time

  • have transition between your stories

  • have more than the minimum number of stories

  • prepare and practice as much as possible


American History Individual Presentation

Objectives:

- gain a better understanding about a specific topic in American History
- utilize various resources in the media center
- develop and improve research skills
- provide an opportunity to utilize and develop on-line research skills
- present an organized accumulation of information concerning a specific topic in American History
- apply the use of various technology applications in your presentation

Requirements:

- 8-12 minutes
- must utilize the computer in your presentation [i.e. PowerPoint, (type must be at least 54 pt. in order to easily  be seen in the back of the room)]
- at least 1 handout (we can help with copies if necessary)
- eye contact with audience
- adequate voice projection and pace
- use of an introduction, body of information, and a conclusion
- hand in a typed Works Cited (organized according to MLA form)

  (at least 5 sources, not including encyclopedias)

Suggestion:

- use a variety of visual aids, (posters, pictures, overhead, video clips)


Your project will be evaluated on:

- organization
- content
- quality of delivery
- use of technology
- quality of research
- quantity of research
- works cited
- following directions

 Topics will be assigned by Mr. Slonim.  If an alternative topic is preferred, you must get prior approval him.

-    eye contact with audience
-    adequate voice projection and pace
-    use of an introduction, body of information, and a conclusion
-    hand in a typed Works Cited (organized according to MLA form)
-    at least 4 sources (not counting encyclopedias & textbooks), with at least 1 of them being a Primary Source

Suggestion:

- use a variety of visual aids, (posters, pictures, overhead, videoclips)

Your project will be evaluated on:

2nd Quarter Research Paper

Topic:         Your choice of subject or author (with approval by Mr. Slonim).
                    Subject/author must be from the time period 1865-1900. If you select an author, you
                    will focus on the impact of the times on his/her work.. You must have your topic
                    selected and approved by 4th period Monday, November 22nd .
Length:       This paper is to be 4-5 pages in length. It must be typed in 12 pt. type, double spaced, and is                      to have 1 inch margins on all sides. (recommended to gather enough information for 6-7 pages                      so that when you edit, you have good quality)
Sources:     Must have a minimum of five (5) sources. At least one of the five sources must be a primary
                    source. If encyclopedias are used, they do not count toward the source minimum, however
                    they must still be included in your Works Cited.

Due Date:  The beginning of 4th period on Friday, December 10th. Absence is not a valid excuse
                    for the paper not being turned in.
A letter grade will be deducted for every day the
                    paper is late. (5 minutes late on Friday the 10th is the equivalent of 1 day) Satisfactory
                    completion of this paper is required in order to receive a grade for 2nd quarter.

3rd Quarter Research Paper

American History Research Paper- Topic Paper
Mr. Slonim

Assignment:  Write a 4-6-page research paper following the guidelines in Writer’s Inc. or MLA.  Your topic must be related to 20th century American History or American Literature.   Your paper must be typed and you must have at least four references.  Papers are due on Wed., March 21st at the beginning of 4th period.  

 

Week one:  Select a topic and make a list of potential sources you will be using and idea you wish to explore about this subject.  By Mon., Feb. 26th you should have 20 notecards relevant to your topic.

 

Week two:  Read and take notes.  Topic and thesis should be finalized and you should have at least three references.  Forty note cards are due on Mon. March 5th.

 

Week three:  Find final sources and continue to take notes.  You should have sixty note cards and at least four sources by Mon. March 12th. (cards will be checked)

 

Week four:  Start writing!  Complete sentence outline with introduction is due on Fri., March 16th.

 

Week five:  Final draft with title page, works cited, and photocopies of sources used are due at the beginning of 4th period on Wed. March 21, 2001.   Paper must be turned in on time for full credit.  If you are absent it is your responsibility to send your paper to school.  Failure to turn in photocopies will result in a 40% grade reduction.

 Reminders:

 

1.  Minimum required number of sources cited is four.  (Include a variety).  Encyclopedias may not be used as cited works though you may consult them for background information.

 

2.  No source may be listed in the works cited list unless it has appeared in internal citations within the text of the paper.

 

3.  You are responsible for knowing what plagiarism is and for avoiding it.  Remember that there are two reasons why you must cite material in your paper:

     

            1) You must give credit to an author if you have quoted his/her words exactly.  (Remember to use quotation marks.)

            2) You must give credit to an author if you have used his/her information or idea

                  and put this information into your own words.  In this case you do not use quotation marks.

4.  A paper lacking either internal citation or a works cited page will automatically receive a failing grade for plagiarism.
